In his letter to the Catholic Church in China Pope Benedict XVI invited the faithful in the whole world to celebrate May 24 of each year as World Day of Prayer for China. It is the commemoration day of Our Lady “Help of Christians”, under which name she is greately venerated at the shrine of Sheshan.
The Swiss Bishops’ Conference in 2009 took over this suggestion of the Pope and called on the faithful to pray on this day especially for the Church in China.
The Protestant members of the Ecumenical Association Switzerland-China gladly accepted the invitation to celebrate this day of prayer for China together with their Catholic brothers and sisters in the EASC.
This EASC decided in 2015, to celebrate the Day of Prayer in the parish church of St. Sebastian Immensee/SZ. This year, the Day of Prayer coincides with Pentecost Sunday.
In addition to about 100 parishioners over 50 guests from all over Switzerland took part in the Day of Prayer, many of them Chinese immigrants, Christians and non-Christians. The Chinese priest Peter Zhao led the service while Martin Jäggi from the Bethlehem Mission Society and Daniel Salzgeber, Canon of the Great St. Bernard, co-president of ŒGSC, concelebrated.
After lunch Fr. Zhao led us through a PPT presentation insight into the Church in China 2015, which he characterized as a church with great challenges and a great hope.
